REASONS TO STAY
LOCATION Just a 35-minute drive from Hobart, this idyllic river valley seems a world away. “A little bit of country close to the city,” says Faye Windsor of Derwent Real Estate, and who grew up in New Norfolk. HISTORY AND SCENERY A stunning combination of river valley, and mountain backdrop with a number of historic hamlets sprinkled around the district. DERWENT VALLEY Come to the area in autumn to see the spectacle of majestic trees such as oaks, willows, and elm light up the valley in autumnal tones.
RUSSELL FALLS AND MOUNT FIELD NATIONAL PARK
Often called Tasmania’s prettiest waterfall, Russell Falls in Mount Field National Park is a great day trip about 40-minutes’ drive north-west of New Norfolk. It’s a 20-minute return walk to the falls through cool rainforest with tall fern trees. Mount Field has camping facilities, barbecues and a visitor centre. parks.tas.gov.au >
