MORNING LIGHT
Navy is a beautiful bedroom hue. It adds depth and helps lull weary bodies to sleep. Even though it’s a dark colour, it is not as harsh as black and has more warmth than charcoal. Navy is also a beautiful accent shade against patterned fabrics, as seen in this room (pictured left) designed by Anna Spiro. “I love the dark walls,” she says. “I feel they really contribute to a restful, peaceful space.” Anna was given free rein on this project. “The owner liked my style and just wanted me to create something that wasn’t too modern and was comfortable and inviting,” she says. As a result, Anna selected lots of beautiful fabrics, wall coverings and antique furniture with a few modern pieces for a layered aesthetic. “I like a bedroom that feels like it wraps itself around you and protects you from the outside world,” she says. In contrast to Anna’s dark walls, architect Eva-marie Prineas chose Dulux Vivid White paint for the bedroom walls in this cottage (pictured below), where the brief was to create a light-filled space. The end result is a contempoary and minimal bedroom that cleverly uses memorable accessories to stand out. One of the great benefits of painting a room white is that you can use accessories to change the mood instantly at different times of the year. For example, if you want to make your bedroom more cosy in the cooler months, just add rich accent colours such as a quilt cover in deep, inky blue — a beautiful bedfellow for white. Eschewing a bedhead in favour of stacked pillows in contrasting colours makes the room more versatile, too.
