SERENE DREAMS
A little tartan can go a long way in an interior scheme, injecting a real sense of country charm. To prevent it from looking stuffy however, pick some complementary colours to carry through the room’s overall colour palette. The natural browns and greens used in this bedroom (pictured below) soften the tartan pattern and give the room a masculine edge, while the crisp, plain white bed linen lightens the space and makes it feel fresh. The two-tone stripe on the wall introduces a new blue-grey colour, adding interest and a touch of modernity. Carefully curated accessories such as the vintage wall lamp, keep with the rustic theme but also have a cool industrial look, preventing the room from looking old-fashioned. Another space that has been cleverly updated with smart styling is this bedroom sanctuary (pictured right), designed and decorated by interior designer Justine Hugh-jones for a teenage girl. Justine asked her to select her favourite colour scheme, then chose the rest of the soft coverings, wallpaper and rug to work within the palette. The designer’s deft touch has brought this neo-georgian family home into the 21st century. “I like the fact it’s warm and textural with an element of sophistication, without being too grown up for a young teenager,” Justine says, adding that bedrooms need to be peaceful spaces, easy on the eye and not too cluttered. Justine is also a fan of curtains or soft Roman blinds so the room feels dressed and welcoming. “There is a cosiness and touch of ethnicity achieved through the layering of Moroccan rugs and hand-blocked Indian textiles,” she says. > For more information, visit wattyl.com.au or justinehughjones.com.
