Country Style

MARNIE GILDER

ABSTRACT PAINTER & DESIGNER, 43 Marnie lives near Angaston in the Barossa Valley with her husband and two children. What do you love about living in country South Australia? The strong sense of community, the great quality of life and the empty beaches. How would you describe your style? I have two different sides to my style that are completely at odds with each other, but that is probably in keeping with my personality. On weekdays when I am in my studio, I simply wear high-top black Converse sneakers, a loose T-shirt and jeans or a denim skirt. In contrast, weekends are usually pretty social — I love a party and enjoy the theatre, which involves dressing up. What are your wardrobe essentials? A pair of navy linen shorts. A denim shirt. A pair of flat but interesting leather sandals. A fine woollen jumper and a show-stopping dress. What do you always pack when travelling? A wool/cashmere jumper and my swimsuit — even if it is snowing, there may be an indoor pool. I also keep a Bobbi Brown Cheek Glow Palette and Juniper Rose Otto Hydrating Mist in my handbag. The rouge makes me look rested (when I’m not) and the mist smells heavenly and makes my skin look dewy. Do you have any favourite clothing labels? Isabel Marant, R13 Denim and Lanvin. Where do you love to shop? I’m reluctant to share this gem, but I will… I buy most of my clothes from Secondo in Melbourne. It is a boutique of pre-loved pieces. I love the rush of buying secondhand clothing, as you never know what you are going to find. The clothes are always more interesting and I take comfort knowing that it’s the more sustainable option. What are your go-to hair and beauty products? Kevin Murphy Shimmer Me Blonde hair treatment and lanolin for my lips. What do you never leave home without? A Moleskine notebook, a LAMY pen, my iphone, headphones and a bottle of water. Who are your style influences? I’ve followed Scott Schuman’s blog The Sartorialist for years, but I am also currently inspired by the diversity and depth of Pharrell Williams. I’m impressed by his art/design collaborations. What’s your best style advice? Quality over quantity and always choose natural fibres. > Visit marniegilder.com or marniewark.com
