Country Style

LEE MATHEWS

-

FASHION DESIGNER This nature-inspired designer divides her time between Sydney and her property in Tasmania. How would you describe your style? Quite minimalist — I’m drawn to clean and relaxed silhouettes in block colours, which are so easy to throw on. I only wear natural textiles. What is your design philosophy? I want to create clothing that is durable, timeless and beautiful; something that brings joy every day. What are your wardrobe essentials? A fine-knit crew-neck sweater in cotton or merino wool, a pair of linen or cotton trousers and a statement pair of earrings can take you anywhere and everywhere in all climates. Your favourite accessories? I collect William Spratling silver jewellery, especially earrings. But I also am in love with jewellery by Faris or Ursa Major, which we sell in our stores. What is inspiring your work right now? We just purchased a property in Hobart so I love how unique our landscapes are, and our weird and wonderful plant life. What cosmetic products do you love? I don’t wear make-up so I focus on freshly washed hair — I love De Lorenzo — and a good skincare regime with Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream. I wear Grandiflora’s Sandrine fragrance. What do you surround yourself with at home? We live in a converted warehouse and it’s full of collected treasures, such as Alana Wilson’s vessels and a portrait of our beloved corgis Olive and Teddy, by my old friend Christina Zimpel. What book are you reading at the moment? An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace by Tamar Adler. It’s a collection of essays on cooking with simplicity and thought. Do you ever think about living in the country? Yes! All the time! We love getting away to the fresh air and being by the water, even in winter. I feel so lucky I can split my time between Sydney and Tasmania. What’s your best fashion advice? Just wear what you love, and never sacrifice comfort. Visit leemathews.com.au
