If Da Vinci, Rembrandt and Van Gogh were alive today they would be working as illustrators of children’s books. At the back of the Gleebooks bookshop in Sydney you will find paperback editions of prize-winning storybooks both recent and classical for about $15. Zagarenski has won major prizes for the genre. Logue’s gentle story (there doesn’t have to be monsters, danger, misery and dark themes) trickles through lustrous paintings in which, if you look closely, there are unanswered questions. The inquistive four-year-old will point them out. You’d better be ready with your suggestions.
