The constantly changing scenes and characters captured by his lens are what inspire this seasoned photographer who shot the stunning Dunes House on page 58. On arrival at St Andrews Beach on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Derek says he was unprepared for just how close the Dunes House would be to its namesake. “The house is virtually on the sand dunes. The view from every window is either a sand dune, coastal scrub or water,” he says. It’s a far cry from the flat plains of the Wimmera region in Victoria’s agricultural heartland where Derek grew up “camping and riding bikes”. His photography career began 18 years ago and he remains as enthusiastic as ever about his vocation. “I love how one day I can be shooting amazing interiors of the country’s best homes, then the next I’m shooting a car in the sand for an advertising client!”
