Darwin Convention Centre, Stokes Hill Road, Darwin. daaf.com.au Henley on Todd Regatta, August 17th Dubbed the craziest event in the Territory, this is the world’s only boating race held without a drop of water in sight — except perhaps in bottles drunk by thirsty participants at the end of this hilarious race across the dry and dusty Todd River bed. Non-boating types can try sandcastle-building competitions, surf rescues and budgie-smuggler races instead, raising funds for Alice Springs’ three local Rotary clubs in the process. 0417 864 085; henleyontodd.com.au
Darwin Festival, August 8th–25th Enjoy hot August nights at the 40th anniversary of this vibrant festival that was originally held to bring the community together after the devastation of Cyclone Tracy. It has since grown into a major arts and cultural event featuring outdoor concerts, theatre, comedy, cabaret, film and visual arts. Held over 18 days and nights during the tropical ‘winter’, it’s a great time to visit the Top End. darwinfestival.com.au
