NSW The Wood Restaurant There was never any doubt that a restaurant at the new Brokenwood cellar door in the Hunter Valley, which was three years in the planning, would take off. All the stars were aligned: a beautiful purpose-built space and the talented and popular hospitality duo, Andrew and Janet Wright, at the helm. Between them they know everyone in the Valley, having run the nearby Cellar Restaurant for 19 years. Such familiarity can only lead to an easy and friendly dining experience, no matter who you are. The space is wonderful; lofty, open and beautifully lit. As for the food? It’s spot on. Andy has let the Brokenwood wines lead the charge, which means plenty of seafood to enjoy with a glass of their much-lauded semillon. Enjoy the best oysters in season, spanner crab pasta, whisky-cured salmon and, what is fast becoming the signature dish, fish of the day served with anchovy and caper butter, clams and broth, lemon and herbs, and a paper-thin slice of Spanish jamon (pictured right). 401–427 Mcdonalds Road, Pokolbin.
