Inspiration for the most important room in the home.

- WORDS HANNAH JAMES

Tranquil tones

A soft, silvery, eucalyptus-green kitchen brings a serene feel to the busiest room in the house. Once a drab council office dating back to the 1960s, Moonliters is now a calming retreat for travellers on the Great Ocean Road – with a kitchen fit for its restaurateur owners, who painted the cupboards in Dulux Paris Creek. Heritage haven

Built in 1864 by the local bootmaker James Townsend, Bootmakers Cottage in Birregurra, Victoria, takes inspiration from its historic roots. Its recent renovation by designer Belle Hemming Bright brought in classic subway tiles, wooden benchtops and an unfitted feel, thanks to open shelving and curtained lower cabinets.

Light, bright and beautiful

Spacious and elegant, this 100-year-old farmhouse in Glen Aplin, in Queensland’s Granite Belt, has the quintessential country kitchen. In a classic palette of white, wood and brass, the huge central island offers plenty of space for preparing meals, and you needn’t go far to eat, with a vintage farmhouse table surrounded by Thonet bentwood chairs just steps away. A brick fireplace puts paid to chilly evenings.
