Country Style

MARGIT SMITH

-

Margit lives with her husband Henry, 39, and sons Noah, 12, Oscar, 11, and Edward, eight (plus dachshund Coco, huntaway Milly and horse Blossom) on a cropping property in Longford, Tasmania. They run more than 5500 breeding ewes on their 1170-hectare farm.

What do you love about living in the country? I love the open space, the views over the paddocks and the Great Western Tiers, the animals, the crisp air… I grew up on a dairy farm in Denmark – my family had 120 milking cows and 160 hectares, including 12 hectares of forest, so the country has always been home to me.

Are you interested in fashion? I like to dress up for the odd occasion, but when you live and work on a farm, you have to wear something more practical.

Who are your style influences? Helena Christensen, Miranda Kerr and Cameron Diaz.

What’s the best style advice you’ve ever received? Wear what makes you comfortable and suits your shape.

What are your wardrobe essentials? A linen shirt in all sorts of colours, jeans, woollen jumper, tights, sweatshirt, riding pants.

What are your favourite clothing labels? I love Country Road, Ortovox, Only, Vero Moda, Iris & Wool, Bow and Arrow, RB Sellars and Binny.

Where do you shop for clothing? For fashion and accessories, I love Coco Blue in Campbell Town.

What are your essential beauty products? I wear Dr Spiller facial products, La Roche-posay sunscreen, and Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream as a lip balm.

Do you have a favourite fragrance? Clinique Happy.

Do you have any favourite accessories? My Mason hat, and handbag from Lake Leather.

What helps you keep a balanced life? A little bit of exercise, whether it’s hitting the gym for a morning session or going for a walk on the farm, plus coffee, nutritious meals made from our own produce, bushwalks with the family and horseriding. Feeding and checking on the animals also gives me a sense of joy and pleasure.

What are you reading/listening to/watching? I like reading Country Style and cookbooks for recipe ideas.

Where are your favourite local spots to eat? Rustic Bakehouse in Cressy has tasty treats (best vanilla slice!) and coffee; Feast Tasmania is a great cafe in Perth (Tas).

Where do you shop locally for homewares? Ecoco in Launceston, and The Evandale Village Store.

What makes your region a special place to live? We are based centrally in the Northern Midlands, so we’re not too far from Cradle Mountain, Bicheno, Low Head, Cataract Gorge, and Ben Lomond National Park, where you can ski. We’re spoiled with places to explore.
