With a com­bined yard­ing of 1400 cat­tle, the third an­nual weaner sale com­prised 831 beef bred steers sell­ing from 280¢ to 344¢ to av­er­age 315¢ firm.

Steers from 200 to 280kg av­er­aged 336¢/kg, while those weigh­ing 280 to 330kg av­er­aged 320¢ and heav­ier types at 330kg plus av­er­aged 306¢/kg.

The 568 beef bred weaner heifers sold from 240¢ to 348¢ to av­er­age 280¢, up 10¢, as the 200 to 280kg heifers av­er­aged 268¢/kg.

The 280 to 330kg weight class av­er­aged 259¢, while the heav­ier 330kg plus cat­e­gories av­er­aged 315¢, with the lat­ter Euro types well sup­ported by live ex­port.

The most dom­i­nate breed was An­gus cat­tle and good lines of Mur­ray Grey, Charo­lais and Sim­men­tals.

Although some buyers were miss­ing, pre­fer­ring the weaned option, they were re­placed by fresh faces keen to se­cure the out­stand­ing qual­ity types.

In ques­tion was whether pre­mium prices would be paid for weaned cat­tle as they have been for un­weaned.
