Cross Stitcher

Make a… summer scissor case

-

Step 1

STITCH the design using two strands for the cross stitch and one for the backstitch. Cut around the triangular design, leaving 1.25cm ( ⁄ in) of blank aida outside of the stitching.

Step 2

CHOOSE how you are backing your scissor case – either cut one triangle from felt, or three triangles from cotton fabric using the stitched aida triangle as a template.

Step 3

FOLLOW this step if you are using felt to back your scissor case. On the aida triangle turn the top edge over onto the wrong side of the aida just above the outer line of stitching. Place your stitched aida onto your felt, pin, and then cut away the top of the felt so the triangles are the same size. With right sides facing, sew together just outside the outer edge of cross stitch. Cut o the excess felt and aida and turn to the right side.

Step 4

FOLLOW this step if you are lining your case with cotton fabric. Place the aida triangle and one cotton triangle right-sides facing. Pin along the top edge, and then stitch just above the outer edge of cross stitch. Open o7u2t, you will have a diamond shape. Reduce the seam al7lo8w3ance on the seam and press flat. Do the same for the other two cotton triangles.

Step 5

PLACE the two diamond shapes together, right-sides facing and matching the centre seams. Stitch around the outer edge of the shape, leaving a gap on one side (the gap should be left on a side where two cotton triangles are matched).

Step 6

REDUCE the seam allowance around the edge of the diamond shape, and clip the seam allowance over the two points. Turn to the right side through the gap. Sew up the gap, and then push the lining down into the scissor case. Finger press the top seam and then use a blunt instrument to push the point well down into the case.
