How to… make a clock

-

Step 1

STITCH the clock in the centre of the aida fabric, and the pendulum and weights on the plastic aida. You can either stitch the clock face with the hands using the smaller chart, or stitch without and use a plastic clock movement to make the clock work.

Step 2

USE strong glue to stick the two smaller hoops together and the two outside hoops together by placing them on top of one another with glue between them. You may have to hold them with clips until they dry. On the outer rings make sure the screw tighteners are in the same place.

Step 3 MOUNT

the stitching using the doublestacked hoops. If you are using a clock movement, use small scissors to cut away the aida at the centre of the clock face, then paint the aida with fabric glue to stop it from fraying. Once dry, push the clock movement through the aida and check the fit. If the clock hands are plastic you may want to trim them a bit with sharp scissors to fit the clock face. Remove the clock movement.

Step 4

TRIM one cardboard circle to fit inside the back of the hoop. Push in place. Neaten the aida at the edges by putting glue around the inside of the hoop and then folding the trimmed aida over onto it. Leave to dry. Make a hole through the cardboard to line up with the hole at the centre of the clock face. Push the clock shaft through this hole and tighten the nuts.

Step 5

CUT out the pendulum and weights from the plastic aida. Use small, sharp scissors to snip away the excess aida around the designs, leaving one blank aida square. Stick each of these to a wooden co€ee stirrer, then cut the stirrers to the correct length, and attach them to the aida on the edge, and at the back of the hoop with glue and a few anchoring stitches.

Step 6

PLACE the second cardboard circle over the back of the hoop and then cut a square from the centre back to allow you to adjust the clock movement. Glue the cardboard circle to the back of the clock around the edges.
