We test 16 pairs of riding shoes that won’t trouble the scales, or your wallet in some cases

Cycling shoes are an essential piece of kit for any rider who clips in to their pedals. They drive the engine room and are one of the most important contact points.

When thinking about how to spend your money there are several variables – the riding you’ll be doing, how the shoes fit, weight, how they look – yes, we are all shallow – and your budget. Fortunately, filter-down technology has brought quality features once reserved for high-end shoes to cheaper models.

Soles are a good starting point when it comes to making your choice, because they usually reflect the cost, weight and stiffness of the shoe. At the lower price end, you’ll find nylon soles, which add weight but offer the most forgiving ride. These are designed for training, all-day cycling and racers on budget. At the opposite end, you’ll find the lightest, stiffest and most energy efficient soles made from carbon fibre and designed for racing.

Lightweight carbon soles might sound like the obvious way to go but the trade-off here is outlay and they can be hard on the feet. The lack of forgiveness and road vibrations can cause fatigue or discomfort.

How the shoe fastens to your foot is another important consideration. Velcro, which does a good job, is found on cheaper shoes and some trying to shed weight. Boa systems have largely replaced ratchet straps. These combine wires with a dial that allow for an even tension, and are light, reliable and easy to adjust on the fly. Lace-up shoes have come back into vogue. While they look good and work well they take longer to get on and off, and are harder to adjust on the move.

Fit trumps all, so we recommend you try before you buy to get the ultimate fit, and always do so in your regular riding socks. Here we’ve tested a range of lightweight shoes to suit all needs and budgets.
