Spring in the UK is a magical time for cyclists after the cold, dark days of winter. The sun pokes its head out, temperatures rise and there’s buzz in the air. It sounds dreamy but the reality is you’ll face a variety of weather conditions and no one kit setup to suit them all. Getting dressed takes a little thought, especially as you may encounter different conditions within a single ride. A cool start could lead to rising temperatures and sunshine before a quick downpour for good measure.
Spring-specific bib shorts made from warmer fabrics are a good option, especially when paired with knee or leg warmers for flexibility to add or remove them during a ride. Another option is three-quarter length bib tights providing warmth and comfort with their over knee coverage.
The long sleeve jersey or jersey with arm warmers, for on-the-fly flexibility, are the classic upper body choices. In recent years there has been a growth in the lightweight hybrid that offers jacket-like qualities in a lighter weight jersey form. These are designed to breathe well and work across a variety of temperatures and conditions.
These jerseys work best with a base layer that will offer insulation, help regulate your body temperature and pull sweat away from your skin. Base layers are available in a variety of fabrics, weights and sleeve lengths.
An often overlooked piece of spring kit is your socks. Fortunately, there are warmer versions available to keep your feet warm during this time of the year. Spring cycling is exciting but unpredictable, so read on to discover the outfit that’s right for you, your riding and your budget.
