Giant Contend SL 1
Taiwan’s Giant is the world’s largest purveyor of high-end bicycles. Experience suggests that it got where it is today by producing top-notch bikes at very attractive prices, and ones you can buy from numerous high-street bike shops. Its 2018 Contend is another impressive all-rounder that hits the heights.
It weighs well under 9kg, and its compact frame – pioneered by Giant back in the 1990s – allows a lot of the carbon composite D-Fuse seatpost to be exposed for rear-end plushness. Cost-cutting is evident in a couple of areas – it has a Shimano 510 chainset and Tektro brakes rather than 105 – but it more than makes up for this in the quality of its ride. Not only is it superbly comfortable, but its wide-range cassette means that you can stay seated longer on challenging climbs. The move to 11-32 cassettes is one that we applaud – if you’re an older rider or new to cycling you’ll warmly welcome the kneefriendliness of that bailout bottom gear. But this Giant is no dawdler. Whack it into top gear, crank it up and this is as sharp as you’ll find; quick, slick and with impeccable handling from the tapered OverDrive steerer.
Looking for one bike for training, fast commuting, sprightly sportives or just about any road cycling? This is one super-serious contender (obvious pun intended) for a test ride.
