SOUTH WALES NEATH

-

My initial plan for this ride was to tackle The Bwlch using its three sides, but this route is even more of a challenge, and takes in two more stunning South Wales climbs.

Starting in Neath, you head upwards right from the start to cross Cimla Hill before dropping down to the base of the huge ascent of The Bwlch. At more than 16km, this is the longest of its three faces which, unremarkable lower down, turns truly spectacular towards the top. After crossing the summit, you hurtle down the northern flank and make your way into Treherbert to find the base of Rhigos. Starting with a couple of hairpins this steady yet demanding climb crosses Hirwaun Common and down into the next valley. Taking a right at the base of the descent, you continue east to Aberdare then turn south on the A4233 to climb Bryn Du.

With four of the best hairpins in Wales, this is a treat to climb and is followed by a descent to return to climb the side of the Bwlch you descended earlier. The final big climb is followed by a glorious descent, then one vicious ramp back again over Cimla Hill and into Neath.
