SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS ABERFELDY

-

Plotting a sub-100km killer loop in Scotland isn’t as easy as it is in other parts of the nation because although there are plenty of giant passes, they’re spaced that little bit further apart.

Start in Kenmore and head west on the A827 along the shore of Loch Tay before gently rising inland to the foot of Ben Lawlers. This, the first obstacle of the day, is a sizeable mountain pass at more than 6km that takes you north through a jumble of hairpins over the ridge and down to Bridge of Balgie in Glen Lyon.

Head back east through Invervar, Fortingall and Keltneyburn to Aberfeldy, where you turn south to climb over the A826 into Glen Cochill. This, the second of the day’s climbs, is marginally the easiest. Following the descent, the loop heads back west and lines up for the finale.

The last climb, up through Glen Quaich, is a wonderfully secluded road that, with some stretches of brutal gradient and its signature twin hairpins, takes you high into the mountains before plunging you back down to the finish in Kenmore.
