Conquer the Cairngorms

-

“The Cairngorms National Park is Britain’s largest national park and home to the UK’s tallest mountains. Those giant granite peaks are never far from your view. Along with the ancient Caledonian forest of Royal Deeside, long winding rivers and little Highland villages, this route has a bit of everything. Even the section next to the A9 is so pretty that it takes your mind off the fact you’re riding near a dual carriageway.

“Circumnavigating the Cairngorms is always going to be impressive. I’ve ridden variations of this route alone, with friends, and in all sorts of weather, so it holds special memories. To have a ride like this on my doorstep makes me feel very lucky. This route is one big photo opportunity, but looking down to Royal Deeside from the top of the Lecht is particularly special.

“This route passes over two Scottish ski resorts: Glenshee – a long, steady climb – and the Lecht – a steep but rewarding ascent from the south. But the section between Pitlochry and the Lecht is my favourite: it has excellent views, climbs and quiet roads. It’s worth stopping at Pitlochry – home to coffee and scones. My favourite is the Escape Route Cafe and Bike Shop. I also like the Fife Arms in Braemar: a grand hotel that welcomes muddy bikers, and does amazing fish and chips.

“The route rides well in either direction, but there’s a train line between Pitlochry and Aviemore, so if you’re concerned about the length, you could use that as a back-up. And there’s a lovely youth hostel in Braemar should you wish to split the ride in two and make the most of the fantastic ale selection at the Fife Arms. I recommend doing the ride in September or October when the roads are quiet and the autumn colours make an already impressive route absolutely one of the best.”
