There’s no escaping the fact that our little island receives more than its fair share of the wet stuff. However, that’s no reason to stop pedalling, with rain jackets offering better protection from the elements than ever.

Riding in the rain allows you to continue training and racing throughout the whole calendar year. It’s also a good time to work on dialling in your skills and to become a better cyclist, both physically and mentally.

Not all waterproof rain jackets are created equally, though. Some are designed to keep you dry regardless of the ferocity of downpour, while others are lighter and will see you through a shower. I took them all out for rides in a variety of inclement conditions including spectacula­r storms. Keeping water out is, of course, essential, but don’t forget that breathabil­ity and staying dry on the inside is vital, too. Brands tend to offer either vapour transmissi­on rates (VTR), where a higher value is better, or resistance of evaporatio­n of a textile (RET), where a lower rate is better. Sadly, brands aren’t always consistent in offering both metrics to make comparison­s easy.

For most, budget will be the biggest factor. Many jackets are both waterproof and breathable but levels vary. The figures stated here are all claimed. Usually, higher-priced jackets offer better protection and breathabil­ity. Additional features, such as taped seams, pockets and adjustable cuffs, will often increase the price.
