£99.99 Mountain-bike brand hits the road

-

WEIGHT 199g (pedals); 80g (cleats)

HT Components might be a brand that’s more familiar to mountain bikers, but with the PK01 it offers a pair of lightweight carbon pedals for road cyclists. They are good for the money and easy to use with the familiar, Look Keo-style cleat system.

The pedal body is constructed from an injected carbon material, which helps to keep the weight low. Inside is a CNC-machined chromoly steel axle with sealed cartridge bearings and DU bushings to ensure they spin smoothly and durability is good. If weight is important to you, there’s a titanium axle version that lops nearly 40g off the weight. At 199g, though, they’re still light for the price compared to competitors.

The injection-moulded carbon base looks smart with its smooth finish, and it provides a stiff pedal base that doesn’t flex under load. The platform is reasonably broad at 65x86mm and offers good, if not stellar, power transfer during the most demanding of situations. The pedal body lacks metal plates in the quest for low weight, so long-term durability will more than likely be impacted by this.

The Look Keo-compatible cleats offer 4.5 degrees of float (0-degree cleats are also available) with smooth and easy movement enabling you to find a comfortable pedalling position. Clipping into the pedals is easy with a solid confirming ‘clunk’, while the adjustable release tension prevents you accidentally pulling your foot out in sprints.

Power transfer feels good with the PK01 pedals when you get on the gas, yet the small platform doesn’t feel quite as planted as some rival systems. The serviceable bearings run smoothly and the pedals feel robust. The weight is good for the money, making them a decent option if you want to stick with the Look Keo system but are keen to upgrade to a lighter model.
