BU Y ER’S GUIDE BIB SHORTS

We test nine pairs of bib shorts to keep you pedalling in comfort and style this summer

-

The first day of the year that you slip on your bib shorts is always a glorious one. We test nine and offer our buying tips

Buying a pair of bib shorts is one of the most important investments you’ll make. As the main contact point between you and the bike, a comfortable well-fitting pair of bibs can be the difference between hours of happy pedalling and utter discomfort.

Shorts technology has evolved so now even budget-priced shorts offer a better ride than ever before. Size is important and the overall fit should be snug yet comfortable in the pedalling position, without the chamois pad moving around. With some high-end shorts aimed at racers, you may need to size up.

Pad size and thickness vary and no particular design is definitively better. It depends on your size, shape and what feels right with your saddle. Pad technology continues to develop, with multidensity foams, different layering and thicknesses all being combined to offer relief. Some use gel inserts for added comfort.

Looking after your rear will repay you with hours of pleasant riding. Always wash your bibs after every ride to avoid bacterial infections, and a little chamois cream helps reduce friction and often has antibacterial properties – many riders swear by it. Don’t be tempted to try petroleum jelly instead – it is hard to wash out, can prematurely wear out pads and holds bacteria. If you ride regularly having more than one pair of bibs is a very good idea.

Bib shorts choice, quality and performance have never been better, but they are a particularly personal preference – you need to find which ones work best for you and your riding type. Here we test nine of the best bibs to suit all budgets and riding styles.
