POOL RESOURCES

“When my training pool closed during lockdown I worked on other areas of my mental and physical wellbeing: my nutrition, psychology, resilience, and I did a lot of cycling – 50-60km a day whenever I could.”

GREAT ESCAPES

“I’ve always been into cycling. I ride a Look 695 carbon bike – not that the weight or sleekness makes much difference with my shoulders being so wide! I love the community of cycling and, when it’s beautiful, being outside can take away some of the pressure too.”

CHARITY RIDE

“I also took part in a virtual 100km on the trainer in summer April 2020 to raise money for the NHS. That was a lot harder than I thought as I hit some technical problems at 20km – thankfully sorted by 57km. Along with the raffle of my Rio 2016 swimsuit I raised around £13,000.”

WEIGHTS FIRST

“I always do weight training before my cardio sessions because this really helps me build strength without getting bulky. By lifting weights and doing dumbbell work but no more than five reps per set, then doing the endurance work afterwards, I can get strong but without growing muscle.”

OLYMPIC HEIGHTS

“I can’t risk injury at the moment so I’m off the bike but I hope to be riding more after the Olympics. I’ll go out every day following a route from my home in Loughborough up towards Nottingham – there are some inclines. Like most riders I hate the climbs… but I also live for the burn!”
