E BIKE CAFE, WEYMOUTH

Soak up the healthy vibe while exploring the Jurassic Coast in the south of England

-

Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is more walking than cycling country, and Weymouth’s seaside prom is out of bounds to cyclists in summer. But there’s plenty of fine riding to be had nearby on the cosy lanes through thatched villages such as Abbotsbury. The panorama from Hardy Monument over hills and sea is superb, and the slightly strange ride over to Portland Bill suggests a mix of Gibraltar and Land’s End.

And in a former warehouse right on Weymouth harbour, where until recently trains clanked along the road, is a possibly unique new ebike cafe. It’s a hub for club and day riders, e- or not, as well as locals, holidayers, and triathletes training for Weymouth’s numerous events.

Pete and his wife Josephine run the shop, and stock dozens of electric bikes (mostly Specialized, but there’s a nifty £5k Colnago e-gravel model) in their (e-only) workshop. Pete’s something of an e-vangelist, aiming at those who don’t already cycle but could buy an ebike as ‘second car’ to explore the beautiful but hilly countryside to Dorchester, Bridport or Lyme Regis.

Mental wellbeing and healthy eating are priorities, with superfoods and organics prominent, though the less concerned can enjoy ‘chocoholic bowls’ or a beer, plus an array of traybakes.
