VIKING GRAN FONDO 2O22

On this long-distance day ride, it’s as much about the experience you have as the time you clock

HÆRVEJSLØBET Train right

– The Viking Gran Fondo is a challenging and unforgettable ride back through history. You’ll enjoy a fascinating mix of physical challenges for your inner Viking, plus see historical sights and beautiful landscapes. It’s also a great opportunity to combine a cycling challenge with a wonderful family holiday.

● The longest route is 275km long and features beautiful landscapes and rolling terrain as well as challenging and steep hills. You need to bring out your inner warrior to complete the course as the distance challenges even the most experienced cyclist. Training in big hills isn’t necessary, but you will need good endurance and a strong mindset from long and steady rides. If nearly 300km is too much, there are shorter routes including 160km and 125km options, plus a 95km gravel route.

Kit choice

● All types of bikes except triathlon bikes are welcome. You can even ride on an e-bike. We recommend a comfortable road bike suitable for long rides as well as a wide range of gears for the steep hills. The Danish weather is often windy and can change quickly, so bring arm warmers, a gilet and maybe even a rain jacket. There are plenty of feed stations, so you won’t need to bring loads of energy products.

Event weekend

● You’ll be setting off early, so we recommend staying the night in Flensburg or close by. There’s parking near the starting area. This is also where you pick up your starting number, which usually takes just a few minutes. We recommend arriving an hour before your start time, so you have time to prepare and perhaps hand over your bags for transportation to the finish. Before the event, you’ll receive an email with all the necessary information.

The ride

● The first 150km are fairly flat, but the next 100km are the most challenging. You enter Vejle Ådal whose steep hills have featured on the queen stage of the Tour of Denmark multiple times. You need to fuel well right from the start and gauge your efforts, as there’s still a long way to go. It’s not all suffering, though, as this part contains some of the most beautiful sights and landscapes too.

Fuelling up

● The Viking Gran Fondo is renowned for having the best feed stations of all Danish cycling events. On the 275km route, there are seven feed stations all set up and run by volunteers from local clubs and organisations. You’ll find a selection of pastries, cakes, bread, snacks and meals such as pasta or soup as well as energy drinks and coffee. You’re encouraged to take your time and enjoy the selection and unique atmosphere.
