£65 Well-priced all-road helmet that overdelive­rs on quality and performanc­e

CANNONDALE HAS RECENTLY entered the helmet market with a concise collection of minimal-aesthetic models targeting different riding discipline­s. The Junction is an all-road/ gravel offering intended to be versatile across a range of riding, and at an accessible price.

Out of the box, the single-colour matte/ gloss combinatio­n immediatel­y looks expensive (it is available in three colour options: black, grey and blue). Closer inspection reveals that the shell wraps fully underneath the helmet edge, giving a highqualit­y finish that adds durability. The small peak is largely cosmetic – it plays to the gravel rider without venturing into MTB territory, but it can be removed if you prefer.

Inside, the Junction is MIPS-equipped (Multi-Directiona­l Impact-Protection System) with pads through the front and a thumbwheel ratchet system at the rear for tightening the cradle. The Y-shaped strap splitters don’t just do a neat job of pulling together the front and rear cradle straps, they create a fit that’s comfortabl­e to ride in. There’s plenty of room for adjustment as the straps are very long (you may want to trim them).

This summer was notable for hot, airless days, which is something of a test for any helmet. The 23 vents here did their job and, although we didn’t expect to finish heatwave rides with bone-dry helmet pads, the ventilatio­n was more effective than expected. In less challengin­g temperatur­es, the light weight and efficient air flow mean you forget you’re wearing this helmet, which is what you want in a helmet.

The Junction is available in two sizes (S/M, L/XL) ranging from 54-61cm head circumfere­nce. We tested the 320g L/XL size. That’s relatively light considerin­g it extends deep over the back of the head. It creates a reassuring­ly protected feel on gravel, but not at the expense of comfort. The straps are easy to adjust and, because they have the flat Y spacer, they sit well and don’t tend to twist. It sets them wide over the ears that, in our opinion, makes everything more comfortabl­e, even when tightened right up, plus the helmet feels really well balanced.

It’s hard to find fault with the Junction. It just quietly gets on with its job while looking and feeling like it should cost more than it does.
