Last season’s men’s race was overshadowed by the tragic death of home rider Gino Mäder, who crashed into a ravine descending the Albula Pass on stage 5. It showed just how vulnerable road cyclists are in their jobs. Won last year by the promising Danish rider Mattias Skjelmose, its status as a Tour preparation race is compromised by its proximity to it.
