A SHIP wrecked on Gloucester Island during Cyclone Debbie caught alight on Sunday. Member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan posted a picture of the Tateyama Maru on his Facebook page with smoke billowing from the foredeck and cabin.
Mr Costigan said the Queensland Government failed to act before environmental harm was caused to the area. "I've been leading the crusade to remove the rust bucket from the third biggest island in the region which has been home to much loved national park for 80 years," he said. A spokesperson for QFES said at 4.15pm on Sunday Bowen fire crews and water police were on site.
