Time to end the cycle
PRIME Minister Scott Morrison left the door on decentralisation ajar during a visit to our region on Thursday but the time has come for both he and his state counterparts to open that door wide and start walking through it.
Governments have long talked about relocating government departments to regional areas but the task has usually become too hard.
Any such plan is beneficial on two levels for a place like Mackay.
Firstly, it will help insulate our region from the boom and bust cycle an economy driven by mining and agriculture inevitably experiences.
Secondly, it would provide work for those people governments are keen to see move away from the congested larger cities into regional areas.
As this region continues to get back on its feet, securing a large government department to stabilise employment opportunities and the economy would be the best thing our elected representatives could do.
