Data grant shows Telstra cares about bush
WITH the upcoming relocation of Care Balonne, a little goes a long way, especially when it comes to grants such as the one recently given by Telstra Country Wide.
Initially presented with a $1000 cheque, Telstra phoned back later to say they had made a mistake and that the cheque should have actually read $15,000.
“It was a great mistake for us,” Care Balonne chairperson Robyn Fuhrmeister said.
The money will go towards moving the Balonne Shire’s community hub from its current address to its new home on Henry St.
“The money will be used to assist us with updating our data to the building,” Ms Fuhrmeister said.
“There will be an increase of data requirements that we will need to have to run our business.”
Established in 1993, Care Balonne acts as the community hub of St George and the greater Balonne Shire, running drought support services, suicide prevention, family support and services such as Meals on Wheels.
The grant follows communication Ms Fuhrmeister had with the telco about the existing internet and phone connections.
“It was just about having a conversation with them and letting them know what we really needed,” she said.
“They came up with some really good ideas about what they could provide.”
