Travelling priest does the rounds

Dalby Herald - - BEST OF THE WEST -

FATHER Jamie Collins has been doing the rounds in the lead-up to Christmas, spending much of last week on the road to visit the Maranoa’s smallest towns.

As the only Catholic priest in the region, Fr Collins said he tried to visit most towns before the big day.

“Christmas is a busy time; we’ve had masses all around the place, starting off at Injune, then Yuleba and Jackson, Surat, Mitchell and Mungalalla, Roma , and then Wallumbilla.

“We usually have 10 masses in the program, but two weren’t able to happen this year,” he said.

This kind of travelling hasn’t always been the done thing in this part of the south-west until more recent times, Fr Collins said.

“I’m looking after three parishes here, where there would have been three priests.

“There would have been one for Wallumbilla and Surat, and one for Yuleba and Jackson.

“At Christmas and Easter, we try to get to all of them in a week,” he said.
