Stars align for Syd­ney Trucks & Ma­chin­ery

With Syd­ney’s in­fra­struc­ture and con­struc­tion mar­ket boom­ing, Syd­ney Trucks and Ma­chin­ery (STM) is ex­pe­ri­enc­ing un­prece­dented de­mand for all dif­fer­ent con­fig­u­ra­tions of trucks and trail­ers

It’s an ex­cit­ing time for the team at Syd­ney Trucks and Ma­chin­ery (STM) as they wel­come the re­turn to Aus­tralian shores of In­ter­na­tional Trucks and its flag­ship prime mover the ProS­tar.

Dis­trib­uted lo­cally by Iveco, the ProS­tar was re­launched in the coun­try last year and is the only In­ter­na­tional Trucks prod­uct cur­rently avail­able in Aus­tralia.

With a Cum­mins X15, 550hp engine, matched per­fectly with an Ea­ton 18-speed Road­ranger man­ual gear­box, the truck is ide­ally suited to Aus­tralian con­di­tions, while at the same time show­ing off its proud Amer­i­can her­itage.

As well as In­ter­na­tional Trucks and Iveco, STM are deal­ers for Fuso and of­fer a wide range of ma­chin­ery and con­struc­tion equip­ment such as Ko­belco ex­ca­va­tors and ASV posi-track load­ers.

The fam­ily-owned and op­er­ated busi­ness is a stal­wart of south-west Syd­ney, start­ing out in the early 1970s as a truck deal­er­ship for In­ter­na­tional Har­vester (which be­came Nav­is­tar In­ter­na­tional and Iveco). The busi­ness moved to its cur­rent pur­pose-built deal­er­ship at 10 Dunn Road, Smeaton Grange in 2006, with the foot­print now stretch­ing 35,000 square me­tres.

Direc­tor of sales and mar­ket­ing Roy Pa­pallo says with Syd­ney’s in­fra­struc­ture and con­struc­tion mar­ket boom­ing, de­mand for all dif­fer­ent con­fig­u­ra­tions of trucks and trail­ers has never been stronger.

He notes the In­ter­na­tional ProS­tar is ide­ally suited to the tip­ping work soon to get un­der way at ma­jor projects such as the new Syd­ney air­port at Badgerys Creek, just 20 min­utes down the road from STM’s premises.

The Iveco Stralis is also a great can­di­date, and STM has a va­ri­ety of op­tions in the Stralis range.

For smaller truck op­tions Fuso’s ‘Built Ready’ range is a favourite, with al­loy trays, tip­pers, pan­techs, freezer and re­frig­er­a­tor trucks al­ways in stock and ready to go out for im­me­di­ate de­liv­ery.

Pa­pallo says STM is proud to be one-stop shop for cus­tomers. “We of­fer ev­ery­thing a cus­tomer could need in-house, from fi­nance bro­ker­age to ser­vic­ing, spare parts and emer­gency break down.

“Our work­shop opens un­til 8pm, and we also open un­til 12pm on Sat­ur­day for those own­er­drivers who can’t make it in dur­ing the week.”

new one with one trans­ac­tion. “We un­der­stand peo­ple don’t have the time or en­ergy to wait months to sell pri­vately and deal with en­quires and peo­ple ring­ing up,” says Pa­pallo. “Be­ing able to make that process smooth, as well as time and cost-ef­fi­cient, is one thing cus­tomers re­ally ap­pre­ci­ate with us.”

It’s the per­sonal ser­vice that you get with a long-stand­ing, fam­ily-run busi­ness like STM that Pa­pallo says keeps cus­tomers com­ing back. “We re­ally pride our­selves on the re­la­tion­ship we build up with cus­tomers, and the per­son­able, friendly ap­proach we of­fer. It’s a unique part of our busi­ness and some­thing we re­ally strive to main­tain.”

You’ll of­ten find the boss out in the yard, clos­ing a deal or of­fer­ing ad­vice, rolling up his sleeves and get­ting in­volved. Dealer prin­ci­pal Michael Ger­ace is no stranger to grease, hav­ing started out as the ap­pren­tice me­chanic at the fledg­ling deal­er­ship in the 1970s. Ger­ace has now brought his fam­ily into the busi­ness and his pas­sion is in­fec­tious.

Hav­ing been in the area for so long it’s fit­ting that STM is heav­ily in­volved in the lo­cal com­mu­nity. Last month the busi­ness do­nated

$10,000 to Camp Qual­ity, a chil­dren’s fam­ily cancer char­ity, and Youth So­lu­tions, a drug and al­co­hol preven­tion and ed­u­ca­tion pro­gram. STM is also big sup­port­ers of lo­cal sport­ing teams, be­ing new sleeve spon­sors of South-West Syd­ney FC as the team launches a bid for a spot in the A-League.

STM also sup­port Cam­den Tigers FC, SD Raiders and Oran Park Rovers. The com­mit­ment to soc­cer in par­tic­u­lar is no sur­prise: Michael Ger­ace still pulls on the boots reg­u­larly, play­ing in the over

45s lo­cal league.

The busi­ness has also re­cently do­nated $5,000 to­wards drought re­lief for Aus­tralian farm­ers. Pa­pallo says get­ting in­volved in the com­mu­nity is im­por­tant for STM. “We’ve been here a long time and we love to be part of the com­mu­nity and part of the suc­cess story of south-west Syd­ney.”

Af­ter be­ing in the game for so long it’s lit­tle sur­prise STM has a loyal fol­low­ing of re­peat cus­tomers, with a lot of busi­ness also com­ing from re­fer­rals.

“The great thing about be­ing in­de­pen­dent is we can re­act fast,” says Pa­pallo. “We can make de­ci­sions on the spot, we don’t need to ring up head of­fice any­where or wait for emails to come back from Amer­ica. We can sort things out right away, and our cus­tomers re­ally like that.

“Our ex­ten­sive knowl­edge and our ap­proach to deal­ing with cus­tomers on a per­sonal level are things we are re­ally proud of.”
