Stars align for Sydney Trucks & Machinery
With Sydney’s infrastructure and construction market booming, Sydney Trucks and Machinery (STM) is experiencing unprecedented demand for all different configurations of trucks and trailers
It’s an exciting time for the team at Sydney Trucks and Machinery (STM) as they welcome the return to Australian shores of International Trucks and its flagship prime mover the ProStar.
Distributed locally by Iveco, the ProStar was relaunched in the country last year and is the only International Trucks product currently available in Australia.
With a Cummins X15, 550hp engine, matched perfectly with an Eaton 18-speed Roadranger manual gearbox, the truck is ideally suited to Australian conditions, while at the same time showing off its proud American heritage.
As well as International Trucks and Iveco, STM are dealers for Fuso and offer a wide range of machinery and construction equipment such as Kobelco excavators and ASV posi-track loaders.
The family-owned and operated business is a stalwart of south-west Sydney, starting out in the early 1970s as a truck dealership for International Harvester (which became Navistar International and Iveco). The business moved to its current purpose-built dealership at 10 Dunn Road, Smeaton Grange in 2006, with the footprint now stretching 35,000 square metres.
Director of sales and marketing Roy Papallo says with Sydney’s infrastructure and construction market booming, demand for all different configurations of trucks and trailers has never been stronger.
He notes the International ProStar is ideally suited to the tipping work soon to get under way at major projects such as the new Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek, just 20 minutes down the road from STM’s premises.
The Iveco Stralis is also a great candidate, and STM has a variety of options in the Stralis range.
For smaller truck options Fuso’s ‘Built Ready’ range is a favourite, with alloy trays, tippers, pantechs, freezer and refrigerator trucks always in stock and ready to go out for immediate delivery.
Papallo says STM is proud to be one-stop shop for customers. “We offer everything a customer could need in-house, from finance brokerage to servicing, spare parts and emergency break down.
“Our workshop opens until 8pm, and we also open until 12pm on Saturday for those ownerdrivers who can’t make it in during the week.”

new one with one transaction. “We understand people don’t have the time or energy to wait months to sell privately and deal with enquires and people ringing up,” says Papallo. “Being able to make that process smooth, as well as time and cost-efficient, is one thing customers really appreciate with us.”
It’s the personal service that you get with a long-standing, family-run business like STM that Papallo says keeps customers coming back. “We really pride ourselves on the relationship we build up with customers, and the personable, friendly approach we offer. It’s a unique part of our business and something we really strive to maintain.”
You’ll often find the boss out in the yard, closing a deal or offering advice, rolling up his sleeves and getting involved. Dealer principal Michael Gerace is no stranger to grease, having started out as the apprentice mechanic at the fledgling dealership in the 1970s. Gerace has now brought his family into the business and his passion is infectious.
Having been in the area for so long it’s fitting that STM is heavily involved in the local community. Last month the business donated
$10,000 to Camp Quality, a children’s family cancer charity, and Youth Solutions, a drug and alcohol prevention and education program. STM is also big supporters of local sporting teams, being new sleeve sponsors of South-West Sydney FC as the team launches a bid for a spot in the A-League.
STM also support Camden Tigers FC, SD Raiders and Oran Park Rovers. The commitment to soccer in particular is no surprise: Michael Gerace still pulls on the boots regularly, playing in the over
45s local league.
The business has also recently donated $5,000 towards drought relief for Australian farmers. Papallo says getting involved in the community is important for STM. “We’ve been here a long time and we love to be part of the community and part of the success story of south-west Sydney.”
After being in the game for so long it’s little surprise STM has a loyal following of repeat customers, with a lot of business also coming from referrals.
“The great thing about being independent is we can react fast,” says Papallo. “We can make decisions on the spot, we don’t need to ring up head office anywhere or wait for emails to come back from America. We can sort things out right away, and our customers really like that.
“Our extensive knowledge and our approach to dealing with customers on a personal level are things we are really proud of.”
