No more Murray mix-ups
Confusion between the NSW state seat of Murray and the Victorian federal seat of Murray is to be eased, with a federal electoral boundary redistribution to include a name change.
The Australian Electoral Commission has confirmed the federal electorate of Murray will become the seat of Nicholls at the next federal election.
It will incorporate Campaspe Shire, the City of Greater Shepparton, Moira Shire, Seymour and Broadford and surrounding areas.
Damian Drum will continue to be the Federal Member for Murray until writs are issued for the next federal election, where he will then become the candidate for Nicholls.
‘‘It will be business as usual for me and I will continue to work hard representing everyone in the Murray electorate and hopefully everyone in the electorate of Nicholls after the next election,’’ he said.
‘‘It is great to see a federal electorate being named after one of our local heroes, who made such a big difference to our nation.
‘‘Sir Doug Nicholls has been described to me as Australia’s very own Martin Luther King; he paved the way for indigenous Australians in sport, religion, politics and the all-round community.
‘‘Sir Doug was a key figure for the ‘yes’ vote in the 1967 referendum to recognise indigenous Australians as citizens. He and his wife Gladys accomplished many great things throughout their lives and they are both very deserving of this recognition.’’
People living in the Loddon Shire will become a part of the Mallee electoral division at the next federal election.
Voters who live in Euroa and Violet Town will vote in the Indi electorate.
