Kindness at the core of Deni group’s efforts

Deniliquin Pastoral Times - - OUT & ABOUT - By LOURENE LIEBENBERG

The Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure informed decisions will be made about how to spend the funds that have been raised by Brenda Norman’s Channel 4 Change charity.

Many local people have contributed so generously and continue to do so — and as Brenda’s English Channel crossing is getting closer, we hope people will continue to support this great effort.

Deni MHAG has been consulting with the community in different ways and gaining insight into what the needs are.

Earlier this year, Deni MHAG hosted a community meeting about bullying.

Bullying is a known contributing factor to mental health issues, and the group has continued to meet and to work with a smaller group of interested parties to develop a systematic approach to test the viability of a community action group.

This group called ‘#denisaysno’ will meet again to discuss the implementation of a draft strategic plan.

Kindness is at the core of this group, and we know kindness promotes great mental health so we are excited to see how all the projects on the table can be merged towards achieving a kinder and mentally healthier community.

Deni MHAG also chaired and hosted a strategic planning day in April, specifically to discuss youth mental health initiatives related to Channel 4 Change funding.

Some of the ideas shared were about continued Mental Health First Aid training, guest speakers/advocates that would engage youth, and finding innovative ways to ensure youth know where to get help when and if needed.

We are fortunate that all the service providers who are involved in providing mental health services to youth in Deniliquin attend our meetings and we have certainly got the expertise around the table to look at well researched, evidence based practice to inform our decisions about projects to benefit our youth and our community at large.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, August 7 at 3pm at Intereach and anyone is welcome to attend.

Be sure to follow the facebook pages #denisaysno and Deni MHAG for regular posts and updates.
