Exciting time for the Rams
Deniliquin Rams president Clint Free has said it’s an exciting time to be involved at the club.
Speaking ahead of the football and netball clubs AGM to be held tomorrow, Free — who plans to take on the top job for a second season — said a recent funding windfall had given everyone a lift.
The Rams were one of a handful of local sporting clubs to receive a sizeable grant this month, allocated $559,000 in the latest round of the Stronger Country Communities scheme.
The grant is regarded as a once-ina-generation opportunity for the club which plans to install a playground, relocate and renovate the kitchen and improve the clubhouse viewing areas upstairs and downstairs.
Free said with such exciting times ahead he believes there is a strong feeling of optimism and he wants other people to get on board.
‘‘These upgrades will be unbelievable and will only add to the wonderful facilities we already have.
‘‘Footy and netball clubs take a lot of work to run for everyone involved, and news like this at the end of the season was great timing and gave everyone a lift.
‘‘We’ll also have new netball courts in place for next season thanks to a Stronger Community grant we received last year.
‘‘It’s an exciting launching pad for 2019, and with the AGM coming up I’d encourage new people to get involved at a committee level, and even former committee people perhaps getting back on board after some time away.
‘‘We’d appreciate some extra hands with the year we have ahead. There’s a lot of selfsatisfaction to be gained from helping out — I know I’ve really enjoyed it and I’m already looking forward to 2019.’’
Free said anyone interested in joining the committee or taking on a role at the club can contact him on 0417 042 775.
He said there are roles available that don’t require joining the general committee.
‘‘For example, we had our long-time head trainer Michael ‘Kookaburra’ Bennett stand down from this position at the end of the season. Kooka will stay on to help but we’d love for someone to step up and fill the void.
‘‘There are training courses and expenses the club will pay for to ensure the right person has the skills needed to do the job, and Kookaburra (Bennett) will be there for support.’’
The Deni Rams AGM will be held at 6pm on October 24 at the Hardinge St Oval clubrooms.
