Whyman joins Roos
Deni Rovers sign ex-AFL player for 2019 season
The Deni Rovers have wasted no time in bolstering their list with exAFL player Djaran Whyman signing on for the 2019 Picola & District League season.
The former North Melbourne listed player will be back in the blue and white guernsey after a two-year stint with Rumbalara in the Murray League.
While only managing three games at AFL level, Whyman brings plenty of experience to the side, having also previously played in the VFL and SANFL
Rovers coach Josh Bode said Whyman will be joining the club as a playing assistant coach.
‘‘Djaran brings a lot of experience to the side and is a very strong communicator,’’ he said.
‘‘He’ll be a great asset to the side with his on field leadership.
‘‘We’ll look to play him forward, where he has played the majority of his career.
‘‘He’s 35 now but he still has a few years left in him to play well at our level.’’
The Roos will also welcome back two familiar faces with speedster Rhys McCulloch and young ruckman Josh Flight also committing to play in 2019.
McCulloch missed the 2018 season as he was away travelling overseas, while Flight spent the year playing for Wakool in the Golden Rivers League.
With ruckman Adam Bodey set to miss the 2019 season and speedster David Smith playing for Ardmona in the Goulburn Valley League, Bode believes Flight and McCulloch will be the perfect replacements.
‘‘Adam will be travelling overseas next year so we’re very happy to have Flighty back at the club,’’ he said.
‘‘Flighty will share the ruck duties with James Kirby and we’ll have Rhys come back in to add some run through the middle of the ground.
‘‘We’ve tried to target locals with both Flighty and Rhys playing senior and junior footy with the Rovers in the past.
‘‘They join last year’s recruits James Gilligan, Alex and Joe Hay, Dylan East and Pete Lewis as players who have previously played for the club.
‘‘We’ll also have Gilly (Gilligan) and Alex (Hay) stepping up to help out over pre-season to run training sessions.’’
The Roos will be a serious contender next year, also announcing the re-signing of the majority of their 2018 playing list, with Bodey and Smith the only two players set to miss.
‘‘We brought in blokes like Dylan and Nathan Kerr, Des Morgan and Ricki Waters last year and they have all fit right in at our club,’’ Bode said.
‘‘Last year we had 12 changes to the side but this year there are only three.
‘‘We’ll have to play a little bit differently but everyone knows how each other plays, so that should hopefully reflect on the footy field this season.’’
The Rovers will start their preseason at Memorial Park on Friday December 14.
