Baby Jax is 2019 first

- By OLIVIA DUFFEY

Baby Jax Van Beusichem arrived two days early to be Deniliquin’s first baby of the new year.

He narrowly missed the first day of the new year, born at 9.04am on Wednesday, January 2.

Jax, who weighed in a 4450g (9lb 13oz), is the first child for Deniliquin couple Emma Lumber and Myles Van Beusichem.

Myles said they were astonished to learn Jax was the first baby to be born in Deniliquin in 2019, which has earned the new family some great presents courtesy of Gail McLean.

‘‘We weren’t expecting it at all, very surprised with all the gifts,’’ Myles said.

‘‘The midwives (Rachel Bull and Rebecca Pierce) did a really good job and were there for Emma. I was also there for the labour, supporting Emma as much as I could.

‘‘It’s overwhelming being a parent now; nothing like I had expected it to be.’’

Emma was in labour with Jax for seven hours, with the final stages lasting just 45 minutes.

Mrs McLean visited the new family yesterday, generously showering them with singlets, socks, nappies and bath items for Jax and wine, chocolates, flowers and an engraved silver cup for Emma.

She has organised the gift every year for 31 years, after she felt recognition was lacking when she gave birth to her son Miles McLean on New Year’s Day in 1987.
