Gardening lover’s new design is a Tidy winner
Barb White only started developing her Harfleur St garden in June 2018, and the effort she has put in so far has already caught the eye of several locals.
It led to her winning the Deniliquin Tidy Towns Garden on the Month award for January.
Starting on her design just one month after moving into her new home, the rosie-coloured crepe myrtles are a highlight.
They boast perfumed pink roses, and are complemented by the lilac pentstemons which blend graciously into the gardenscape.
‘‘If I’m working in the garden, people passing by stop to comment,’’ Mrs White said. ‘‘I love it; gardening is my hobby. ‘‘The roses are my favourite part of the garden.’’
Mrs White revealed one of her secrets to such a thriving garden in just seven months is that ‘‘we feed it with lumpy lucerne and cow manure, it keeps the soil rich and moist’’.
‘‘I am very privileged to receive the $50 Mitre 10 voucher.
‘‘Most of it (the plants and flora) actually came from Mitre 10.
‘‘We are very lucky to have Mitre 10 and the staff there who are so helpful in the garden section with advice.’’
‘‘I definitely plan on spending the winnings in my garden.’’
Deniliquin’s Exchange Hotel in End St received the January encouragement award for the transformation of the beer garden.
