Hoods score maiden victory

Deniliquin Pastoral Times - - Local Classies -

Holobowski’s Hoods stormed to their maiden victory in the Deni Rams Sporting Globe Challenge on Thursday night, winning the second and final indoor cricket leg.

The Hoods’ heavily inked skipper Tim Holobowski led from the front in the final, combining with Ricky Gittens to smash 31 in their opening stand and later taking a super lowdown one-handed catch.

Hoods batted first and knocked up a very competitive 45 in the 8-a-side final, which was a remarkable effort considering two of the team’s pairings - Ryan MacDonald/Beau Close and Harvey McKinnon/Nick Glowrey – all combined for a duck egg partnership in the middle order.

In reply, Pitts’ Posse needed 22 off the final two overs, but a tight spell from McKinnon and Liam Pitts saw the challengers fall seven runs short.

Holobowski ($30 IGA) and Gittens ($30 Globe) were recognised by umpire John Arthur as the night’s top players.

In the preliminary matches, Tyn-Men, with skipper Jack Tyndall back in action, knocked up a fine 50. But the Hoods proved it was their night, finishing with 58.

In the second match, the Posse smashed the highest score of the night with 69 off the back of swashbuckling middle knock of 30 from Ben Nisbet and Jake ‘Chino’ Cavallaro.

Nisbet proved crucial to the victory in his first match this season, with a tight opening spell and a super-sharp one-handed catch.

The Posse kept ladder leader Mac Attack to 53 runs with a fine display of keeping from Sam ‘Beaver’ Callanan proving the difference.

This was the first time Mac Attack had tasted defeat this season.

This Thursday starts the two-week dodgeball leg, with the players expected to break out their Spandex apparel and headbands for the highly anticipated indoor clash.

The Rams are holding the Globe Sporting Challenge in replacement of their regular footy season being cancelled.

Matches are played at the Sports Stadium each Thursday.

The overall winning team will be treated to a Globe Hotel package.
