Enjoying golf despite the restrictions

- By the NINETEENTH MAN

We have been extremely lucky to continue enjoying our golf throughout much of the COVID-19 pandemic, although it has impacted on some events as we discovered last weekend.

Unfortunately the Western Riverina District Golf Association made a late decision to cancel its championships, which were scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Locally we have been able to continue with most events and let’s hope this remains the case.

One of the biggest annual events on our calendar, the Spring Classic, will be held on September 12 and 13. Entry forms are in the pro shop or on the club’s website.

With no WRDGA championships last Saturday a stableford event was played instead, though the conditions as they have been for much of the past fortnight were not ideal.

This did not stop Jarryd Pearce scoring 37 points to win A grade by a shot from Geoff Corboy. In B grade Ron ‘Moot’ Turner had 35, defeating Sam Willoughby on 34, and in C grade Scott Atley had the best score of the day, recording 40 points to defeat runner-up Robert Armytage on 36.

Last Thursday the ladies played stableford and the A grade winner was Jenny Swainger with 35 points, on countback to Prue Lloyd, and B grade went to Jennifer Adamson with 39 from runner-up Sarah Aitken with 37.

On Wednesday we enjoyed some early spring weather for the men’s stableford event. A grade winner was Daryl Nalder with 39 points from Graeme ‘Wrecker’ Willoughby on 37; in B grade ‘Moot’ Turner made it a Saturday/Wednesday double with an impressive 40 points from runner-up Geoff ‘Zorro’ Bessell on 36, and in C grade John Metcalfe scored 37, defeating runnerup Ian Campbell 35.

This week we have a stableford event tomorrow and the men’s qualifying round for the Keno two-person ambrose on Sunday.

Tuesday is the ladies Double Date and Mary Bradshaw Bowl, reduced this year from the usual two day format to one day due to restrictions on visitors.

On Sunday September 6 the club will host an open day for members, volunteers and anyone else who is interested, including non-members. This will be a chance to show off the new renovations, including what the club has to offer for functions. There will be an optional nine hole golf competition 10am, with lunch and drinks to follow.

Don’t forget tonight’s raffles and meals, with raffle tickets on sale from 6pm and draws starting at 7.30.
