Local club hosting Summer League
Deniliquin Bowling Club is set to launch their own Summer League competition this weekend.
When the unanimous decision was made that the club would not be competing in the upcoming Campaspe Valley pennant bowls season, due to concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an overwhelming desire by all members to take part in some form of in-house competition.
The in-house pennant competition will see 16 teams of four competing over two divisions — the Western Division and Eastern Division — for seven weeks, before finals.
Different formats of bowls will be played throughout the season with fours, 2x2 pairs, triples-singles and 2-4-2 pairs rounds included.
Each division will also play one Friday night fixture under lights.
Summer League organiser and bowler Tony Scoullar said the club’s bowlers are eager to get back out on the greens in a competitive format.
‘‘We knew we had to do something to fill the void of not playing in the CVBD,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s important to try and get a bit of normality back and to cater to our local bowlers.
‘‘For some people bowls is one of their only social outlets.
‘‘There’s already a fair bit of rivalry brewing between some sides and plenty of banter going on as well.’’
The Summer League will culminate with the top two teams of each division competing in finals.
The western and eastern division winners will then face off in the decider.
‘‘It’s mainly bragging rights that are up for grabs, but we will also have a trophy for the winning team,’’ Scoullar said.
‘‘All rounds will be played over 20 ends, except the 2-4-2 pairs which will be 24 ends, with a break after half the ends have been completed.
‘‘Depending on how well this works, we may look to hold another competition following Christmas as well.
‘‘The Deniliquin Bowling Club is sincerely indebted to its many valued sponsors, especially when they have displayed such loyalty in these very challenging times.
‘‘To that end, in appreciation of that continued commitment, it was wholeheartedly agreed that each team would assume a sponsor’s title as their moniker for the season.’’
The first round will be held at 1pm this Saturday, October 10 at the Deniliquin Bowling Club greens.
