Mayoral elections proceed

-

Local government elections may have been pushed back three months from September 4 to December 4 due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney, but mayoral elections remain on the same date.

In Edward River Council, the process will take place at council’s ordinary meeting on September 16.

Mayors in Edward River are elected by fellow councillors in line with the Local

Government (General) Regulation 2005. Under the regulation, ‘‘councillors must elect a mayor from among their number every two years unless they have a popularly elected mayor’’, information from the NSW Government says.

A council requires a mayoral election both at its mid-term after its ordinary election of councillors in its four year term and a candidate must be nominated by two or more councillors.
