Tournament replaced with triples derby

-

When more severe travel restrictions returned again, the Deniliquin Bowling Club had little choice but to cancel its annual classic pairs tournament.

Traditionally held the first weekend of August, the competition always attracts a quality field of bowlers from all over Victoria and Southern NSW.

Not willing to leave the weekend empty, the club quickly convened a two-bowl triples event, with the White Lion stepping up as the major sponsor.

Sixteen teams took to the greens on Saturday to play three games of 12 ends each.

The two best performing sides progressed to play off in the final over six ends.

The combination of Terry and Chris Taylor and Graham Nisbet was the only team to win all three matches, and subsequently took on Linda Harris, Winnie Patterson and Danny Stanmore — the next best with two wins and a draw from their three encounters — in the final.

The top tournament performers could not maintain their unbeaten form, with Harris’ team prevailing by five shots to claim the win.

The Bowling Club would like to acknowledge the recent efforts of one of its club regulars, Joanne Bovell, who has just completed a very successful ‘Dry July’ Challenge.

Attracting sponsors to encourage her to abstain for the month, Bovell raised more than $6000 towards prostate cancer research.

Despite the fact the bar sales in the club suffered severely, we heartily congratulate her on a mighty achievement.
