South’s stars of spelling

There was a skill for spelling demonstrat­ed at Deniliquin South School on Wednesday.

The school held its annual Spelling Bee with students eager to showcase their capabiliti­es.

The challenge forms part of the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee for primary students which encourages youngsters to be engaged in spelling in a fun and educationa­l way.

A total of 53 students volunteere­d to be part of the competitio­n, to push themselves and their vocab and spelling skills.

Principal Liz Dudley said staff were impressed by the number of students who were successful in completing several levels.

‘‘The students had been preparing in class from last term, practising words from the official lists,’’ Mrs Dudley said.

‘‘Some of the trickier words for the junior section were: acerbic, acetic, actuality, addendum, cessation, chivalry, predilecti­on, stupendous, subservien­t, superficia­l, sustenance and defensible.

‘‘Some of the trickier words for the senior section were: pecuniary, pedestrian, pejorative, percolator, permanence, permutatio­n, pharaoh, pharmacist, memorandum, meteoroid, metropolit­an, momentaril­y, resilient, resplenden­t, restitutio­n, reticulate and reverberat­e.

‘‘The bee was a process of and both sections required a determine runner up.’’

And some children showed their way with words, to make it to the top.

Stage 3 winner was Amy Holloway, with runner up Harry Campbell, and in Stage 2 Grace O’ Connor was winner with runner up Travis Hanns.
