Vax rates rising
Data provided by NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro yesterday has indicated a significant uptake in COVID-19 vaccines in the local area.
The most recent NSW Health figures available to the general public indicate that 41 per cent of eligible residents in Edward River Council have received a first dose of vaccine, and 26.4 per cent are fully vaccinated.
But in yesterday’s press conference, Mr Barilaro reported ERC’s figures were 72.4 per cent for a single dose and 46.9 per cent double dose.
His reported figures were not yet updated on the NSW Health vaccine tracker.
Efforts have ramped up in recent weeks with both of Deniliquin’s pharmacies joining the local GP clinics in administering the vaccine.
In addition, the Murrumbidgee Local Health District’s pop-up Pfizer clinic has been operating in Deniliquin all week.
The NSW Government’s aim is to reach at least a 70 per cent vaccination rate in the eligible population.
The 70 to 80 per cent double dose mark is the threshold the NSW Government wants to reach before it considers reopening higher risk areas such as metropolitan Sydney.
Soul Pattinson owner Bill Crofts encouraged everyone to get vaccinated to help drive up the rate of immunisation.
‘‘The whole avenue out of these protracted lockdowns is with high vaccination rates. The fact is, these vaccines regardless of which they are, end up having a really high effectiveness against stopping serious COVID infection,’’ he said.
Soul Pattinson is taking phone bookings, but walk-in customers are welcome to enquire about appointments which may be available on the day of their visit.
Mr Crofts said the pharmacy has been ready to administer vaccines since February, with three qualified immunisers offering vaccines on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Soul Pattinson was only recently allowed to start providing doses.
‘‘If it was in Melbourne or Sydney it wasn’t a concern in regional NSW, but once we’ve got lockdowns here or cases in Shepparton, a tier two site in Echuca, a case in Wagga, suddenly people are realising it’s a lot closer and they’re realising they need to do something proactive,’’ Mr Crofts said.
Soul Pattinson Chemist began its rollout on August 18 and has given 96 vaccines to Friday last week, with a capacity to administer 60 vaccines per week.
Eric Sim Pharmacy will begin offering the COVID vaccines from September 8. Based on interest so far they will administer 10 doses a day, which may increase with demand.
Mr Sim asked people to book in advance to ensure their spot for one of the Wednesday or Thursday appointments.
By last Friday, the George St Respiratory Clinic — Deniliquin’s main vaccine hub — had administered a total 5110 vaccines, including 1941 second doses.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the district have received 200 doses, with 47 of those fully vaccinated.
A pop-up vaccine clinic was held at the Deniliquin Local Aboriginal Lands Council Wednesday last week, where 77 vaccines were administered.
The MLHD pop-up Pfizer clinic visited Deniliquin from August 2 to 7, and visited again this week.
By Wednesday, MLHD reported 1662 vaccines administered in Deniliquin, including 60 on Monday and 36 on Tuesday.
Shiloh Medical Centre has administered a total 2200 vaccines. Data relating to doses administered at Deniliquin’s Ochre Medical Centre were not available.
