Echuca pair airlifted to Melb

Two people have received surgery in Melbourne following a car crash near Mathoura on Monday night.

Emergency services were called when a black Holden Acclaim station wagon left the road when travelling south along the Cobb Highway, about 10km south of Mathoura.

The car reportedly crossed over the north bound lane and through grass before colliding with a tree.

The car spun 180 degrees and came to a rest next to another tree.

Police said the 37 year-old male driver and his 35 year-old female passenger — both from Echuca — were unable to remove themselves from the car.

The driver sustained serious leg injuries, while the woman suffered severe injuries.

Both were treated at the scene, before being taken to Echuca Airport to be airlifted to Melbourne hospitals.

The man received surgery to his knee, and police said the latest reports indicate he is in a stable condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The woman underwent surgery for internal bleeding at the Royal Alfred Hospital, and is also reported to be in a stable condition.

Officers from Murray River Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As inquiries continue, police are urging anyone with dashcam footage from the area to contact Deniliquin Police on 5881 9299 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
