Plenty of veterans, despite restrictions

-

Despite the travel restrictions, golfers have made their way to Deniliquin for the Veteran’s Week of Golf.

Unfortunately we have been unable to welcome our Victorian or Sydney region visitors this year, however the event has still been well supported.

The activities started with registration at the club on Sunday, with a fourball event played on Monday. The fourball winners were Lee and John Daley with 47 points, by a shot to Cory and Wendy Liefting.

On Tuesday we had the first 18 holes of the 36 hole event, which was completed yesterday. Results were not to hand at the time of going to print.

The usual men’s stableford event was contested on Wednesday. A grade winner was Peter Joice with 38 points from Matt Thomas, who had 36 points including seven birdies. Jim Hetherington had 43 points to win B grade from Dick Bolton.

Last Thursday the ladies played their Medal of Medals with a stroke and putting round. Medal winner was Wendy Liefting with an impressive net 66 and she also won B grade from Trish Chandler 68. The A grade winner was Felicity McCalman with net 69 from Cheryl Fuller 71.

On Saturday it was the coveted Borella Cup and you needed a good score to be in the running. Colin Thompson scored 44 points to win the Borella Cup and the D grade event.

A grade winner was Troy Grant with 39 points, from runner-up John Radeski 36; in B grade Ken Wemyss continued his good form to score 41 points, from runner-up Geoff King 40, and in C grade Keiran Collins had 41 from Cory Liefting 38. The D grade runner-up to Thompson was Don Alexander with 41 points.

Don’t forget to get your team organised and registered for the Summer Sixers, which will kick off in a couple of weeks.

This weekend we have versus par on Saturday and the Navorina Charity Day on Sunday.

Members and guests are advised that the club is operating under strict COVID-19 protocols as required by the NSW Government. This means golfers must be double vaccinated to play in a group of four, and double vaccination is also required in the clubhouse. You will need to show proof of double vaccination.

As usual there will be raffles and meals at the club tonight. Raffle tickets are on sale from 6pm with draws starting at 7.30. Last week’s results:
