Thomas the favourite in club championsh­ips

With pleasant autumn weather predicted there should be good scores from the leading golfers.

While last year’s champion Matt Thomas quite rightly goes in as favourite to win another trophy, he can expect strong competitio­n from in-form Vince Kelly who fired a superb sub-par round to win Saturday’s stableford event.

The second and third rounds of the championsh­ips will be played over the following two Saturdays.

The ladies championsh­ips start next Thursday, with their second round on the following Tuesday, April 5.

Last Saturday was a stableford event, with Vince Kelly scoring 39 points to win A grade from Brian ‘Billy’ Bourke on 37. In B grade the winner was Duncan McQuie with 36 from Daryl Nalder 34, in C grade Hugh Sutton had 35 from runner-up Jane Armytage 34, and in D grade Mick Huntington was the winner with 37 points, from John Wacheke 36.

Last Thursday the ladies played stroke, with the best scores recorded by Jan Hussey who had net 70, from Vicki Brunker and Fay Harrington net 73.

On Wednesday Barry Barlow continued his good form to take out the A grade stableford event scoring 38 points, by a shot to Leigh Chappell. In B grade Don Alexander recorded 37 points to win on countback to Norm Purtill, and in C grade Laurie Hughes had 40 points from runner-up Bruce Scott 38.

It is a busy week coming up with the aforementi­oned championsh­ips, plus usual Tuesday and Wednesday events. On Tuesday the ladies will play 12 holes par 3, and on Wednesday it is the usual men’s stableford.

Don’t forget to get teams organised for the Corporate Fundraiser Golf Day on Friday May 13, with special guest Tony Morwood.

Friday Night Fun continues tonight, with raffle tickets on sale from 6pm and draws at 7.30pm. There have been good crowds on Friday nights in recent weeks as the quality meals at a reasonable price gain an enviable reputation, so why not make a booking and head to the club tonight?
