Redeyes’ renewed confidence

- By Bryanna Rossow

Coming from a tough season last year finishing last on the ladder, Blighty Football Club’s senior footballers are feeling a new sense of confidence heading into round one of the Picola & District League.

Going head-to-head with Jerilderie at home, seniors coach Kyel Bain said a win will be tough but he is feeling confident.

“They are a fairly hard team, who like to spread when they get the ball,” said Bain.

“But we have the speed, so if we can keep with them and shut down Chris Marshall in the middle, we should be competitive.”

Bain said following their practice match a couple of weeks ago and the introduction of 12 new players this year, the team is feeling really good for round one.

“It will take us a bit of time to gel, but I was surprised at how well we moved the ball in the practice match,” Bain said.

“Billy Michael and Bailey Burke gelled really well together through the middle and we have picked up players this season wo should really help us improve.”

Bain said the team’s goal for the

season is to be a lot more competitive and work as a team.

“The goal is to put up a good fight each week and hopefully win four to five games,” he said.

“It’s been a tough couple of years so it’s just about getting the guys back enjoying their footy with no more interruptions.”

On the netball side of things, the Redeyees have shaken off the rocky off-season, with the lack of senior players and are excited for their first game.

After a practice match last week, they will take the courts on Saturday feeling fairly confident in their round one game against Jerilderie.

With a focus on developing skills, fitness and sportsmanship for the season, netball president Jodie Brown said the club is rebuilding after the last two years.

“It feels like there’s a buzz around the club at the moment,” said Brown.

“We love being competitive, but at end of day, it’s about giving everyone an opportunity to get involved.”

The juniors will kick off play on Saturday, with the A grade netballers taking to the court at 1.30pm and the seniors closing the day from 2pm.
